A greener future

Running digital infrastructure requires significant resources, so we’re focused on using them responsibly. From improving energy efficiency and increasing our use of renewable energy to extending the lifespan of our hardware, offsetting business travel emissions and working with responsible suppliers, we’re taking practical steps to reduce the environmental impact of our operations wherever we can.

Energy efficiency

Energy efficiency

Improving energy efficiency is one of the most effective ways we can reduce the environmental impact of our data centres. We track this using Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), which measures the relationship between the total energy a facility consumes and the energy used by its IT equipment. The lower the PUE, the less energy is being used for supporting infrastructure such as cooling.

PUE is measured monthly at the facilities currently included in our reporting. Based on measured data from our data centres in Iceland and Colombia, our combined operational PUE is currently 1.5.

Renewable energy

Renewable energy

Increasing our use of renewable energy is an important part of reducing the environmental impact of our operations. Our Iceland facility reports 100% renewable electricity, sourced from geothermal energy, while 68% of the electricity used at our Colombia facility comes from renewable sources, primarily hydropower supplied through the national grid.

Looking ahead, our ambition is to move towards 100% renewable energy across our sites as we continue to explore opportunities to reduce our reliance on non-renewable sources.

Hardware lifecycle

Hardware lifecycle

We take a responsible approach to managing technology throughout its lifecycle, helping us make better use of resources and reduce waste. This means considering the environmental impact of our equipment at every stage.

At the end of its useful life, we work with recycling and refurbishment partners to manage hardware responsibly. Our zero-landfill policy for retired equipment reflects our commitment to reducing waste and the environmental impact of disposal.

Carbon offsetting

Carbon offsetting

Sometimes business travel is unavoidable, but we recognise the environmental impact it can have. Through TravelPerk’s GreenPerk programme, we offset associated emissions by supporting VERRA-verified carbon capture and reforestation projects.

Since joining the programme in August 2025, we’ve offset 204,376 kg of CO₂ associated with business travel. This allows us to take practical action on emissions that can’t always be avoided while supporting projects designed to make a positive environmental impact.

Supply chain ethics

Supply chain ethics

Our approach to sustainability extends to the suppliers we work with. We vet suppliers for sustainable operations, safe working conditions and ethical and legal business practices, helping us make more informed choices about the organisations we work with.

We also track the percentage of key suppliers that have been vetted, giving us greater visibility across our supply chain. As part of our ongoing work in this area, we’re developing a Code of Conduct to provide a clearer framework for our expectations and support a consistent approach to responsible sourcing.

Social and governance

Supporting our communities

Making a positive difference goes beyond reducing our environmental impact. Led by our ESG Committee, our teams take part in community initiatives throughout the year, supporting projects in the places where we live and work.

These have included reforestation with Fundación Humedales Bogotá in Colombia and tree planting and ongoing care at Monte Victoria in Málaga, Spain. Our employees have also taken part in seasonal gift-giving initiatives in Colombia, Spain and the UK.

We also give every Ilkari employee three paid volunteering days each year, providing dedicated time to support causes and communities that matter to them.

Accountability in action

Responsible operations underpin our approach to sustainability. We comply with applicable energy and environmental regulations in every jurisdiction where we operate, providing a consistent foundation for how we manage our infrastructure and wider activities.

Our responsibilities also extend to the data we’re trusted to protect. We see data security and regional data residency as a social responsibility, helping our customers maintain control over where their data is stored and how it is protected.
