Here’s why you need to manage data like a commodity
If you’re not already thinking data is a commodity, you should be and here’s why.
Commodities have been at the core of global economies for millennia. Salt was used as a commodity to pay Roman soldiers in 50 BC. Over time, cattle, soybeans and gold became commodities that were core economic resources.
And then along came data.
Data creation has grown from 6.5 zettabytes in 2012 to a projected 175 zettabytes in 2025. To put the size of all this data into perspective, 175 zettabytes on a DVD would create a stack of DVDs that could circle the globe 222 times.
With the increasing growth in data volume and the criticality of data sovereignty, companies need to control every aspect of their data, from where it’s stored to how it is managed.
Data sovereignty presents a multi-faceted challenge to companies working hard to meet its requirements
Data localization laws, country by country, make protecting a company’s data difficult. Tech companies and web scalers stitch their cloud capacity together and traditionally only offer portions of a solution. No company controls the data flow or can provide a solution for a sovereign privacy footprint stretching from their domain to data storage.
Control is fragmented across vendors; without control, a company cannot achieve data sovereignty, which leads to regulation fines, legal fees, and critical data loss that can have a massive financial impact on the company’s ability to operate and scale, but also on the brand’s reputation to its customers and partners.
All data is not the same
While data is growing in volume, the nature and location of data is also changing.
Transactional data which is structured data like relational and transactional data in SQL databases has dominated in the past. Due to AI driving triple growth in data, there’s been an increase in unstructured and semi-structured data, known as big data, which has altered the data landscape forever.
IDC predicts that 80% of global data will be unstructured by 2025 because the way we use and consume data and what we expect of it has changed. Rather than being stored in fixed, known locations that can be controlled and managed easily, data is literally everywhere, overloading the cloud infrastructure and leading to exponential cost growth.
It sounds easy, but here’s the challenge: The chances are high that if you’re using a public cloud provider like Google or AWS, you will have sovereignty and control issues. Data demand has stretched hyperscalers’ resources too thin, and reliance on third-party vendors, even if you are using the public cloud, is a sovereignty risk.
The public cloud approach to data sovereignty is an add-on, not an integrated sovereignty approach.
Creating control
Ilkari is the first true sovereign tech company, providing an alternative to hyperscalers and fragmentation, offering end-to-end control over its digital infrastructure.
We brought open and flexible technology to the table, giving companies back control so they can choose sovereignty and avoid vendor lock-ins.
We intentionally curated infinite scale in our solutions to accommodate the accelerating pace of change and comply with regional, national and international privacy laws and regulations.
Because data is your most valuable commodity, we designed our solution to eliminate any third parties between you and your data so you can regain operations control and know exactly where your data resides, flows and is accessed.
We rolled out our best technology to make our technology and services hyper-sovereign from the start.
- State-of-the-art new data centre: Ilkari’s privately held and operated data centre is located in Bogatá’s Free Trade Zone in Tocancipá, Colombia. It is the first data centre in Colombia certified with the latest ANSI/TIA-942-C Rated-3 in Facilities-Construction. The facility features Huawei’s FusionModule2000 solution, which optimises performance as the workload increases.
- Colocation services: Ilkari’s data centre offers regulatory and cost advantages through private and secure collocation services amid the exponential growth of data fueled by AI and blockchain transactions.
- Sovereign cloud: Ilkari’s sovereign cloud solution goes beyond hyperscalers and hybrid cloud concepts. Built with open-source technology, it prevents vendor lock-ins found with public cloud offerings and allows companies to maintain sovereignty over their technology.
- Global Top-Level domain (TLD) registration: Ilkari’s global Top-Level domain (TLD) registration overcomes obstacles and eliminates the complexities of obtaining a domain, providing security and peace of mind for businesses with WHOIS protection, domain name risk assessment, expired domain search and domain brokerage.
Say yes to control.
